sorry, hot tub

would you throw beer cans and blocks of cheese at this woman?

apparently if you're a sports fan in philly, you would. my hero, the one and only sonya thomas, failed to defend her wing bowl crown last night much to the delight of the portly sports fans who had gathered at the wachovia center to watch the annual event. when she entered the event floor, she and her crew were greeted with a shower of boos and beer cans.

thomas shocked the crowd last year by outeating local favorite (and multiple past champion), el wingador. by the way, this local fave is not even from philadelphia, but from south jersey. it would have been one thing if thomas emerged wearing a patriots jersey which another contestant did and which also elicited edible offerings from the rowdy spectators. anyone who follows competitive eating knows that sonya thomas is one of the most classy and gracious competitors around. thomas has not forgotten the humble beginnings from from which she has risen to become the #2 competitive eater in the world. she is not showy, nor is she boastful. she is confident with the accolades to back that up. i thought philly was supposed to be the city that loved the underdog. who in the world of competitive eating is more of an underdog than a 99lb woman who grew up dirt poor in korea, i ask?

cheer on your "native son," of course, but shame on you philadelphia for condemning a true winner you had the privelege to witness. i'll still be rooting for your football team tomorrow, because i actually do pull for the underdog.

from hot tub eric:

hey, i like sonya as much as the next, but dont come down on a crowd for supporting the home town guy.  and yes, south jersey counts as home town here.  thats what home field advantage is all about.  i mean, wouldnt you expect the cowboys to get the same treatment at an eagles game?  of course.  dont forget that el wingador has developed a huge following over the past ten years or so and that outsiders like the black widow and cookie jarvis have only been coming to the wing bowl for the past few years.  jarvis' fat new york ass gets it worse than anybody.  i dont hear you coming to his defense.  he's like the iron shiek of the wing bowl for chrissakes.  why should black widow get off so easy?  because she's a lady?  besides, its all understandable given everyones current state of excitement.  go birds.

you make totally valid points about the crowd rooting for the hometown hero.  my main problem is with fans throwing shit at a comeptitor (and returning champion) who has been nothing but the picture of class.  (sonya posted a congrats note to el wingador on her website the next day.)

but you're right, i could care less about cookie jarvis or anyone else.  i only
care about my girl sonya and it seems like because she *is* a woman, she was
treated even worse!  sonya's only been coming to the wing bowl the last couple
years cause she's only starting eating competitively since 2003 or something.
everyone has to be a rookie sometime.

Crowds at competitive eating events can be cruel. Oda and I went to the 2003 Nathan's contest. When William "the Refrigerator" Perry quit after three dogs, I started booing. Within seconds, there were thousands booing the Fridge off the stage. Certainly among the greatest moments of my life.

By the way, have you ever checked out the website? They have friggin' rankings!! Sonya Thomas is ranked #2, behind, of course, Kobayashi. El Wingador is a pathetic #20. I think he sucks in everything but chicken wings.
